Procedural Planet

A fully procedural planet in Blender. No complex geometry, just nodes!

Technologies Used

Project Overview

The base

The entire planet is procedural and does not use any displacement effects, therefore all in needed was a simple sphere.

Setting up the material

I used various noise textures and mix nodes to blend together and mountainous like environment. I used colour ramps to create smooth transitions between planet colours as well as the atmospheric line that shows when looking at certain angles

Entire node setup for procedural planet material

Final Render

For the final render I setup a camera pointing towards the planet in space. You can see the outskirts of the atmosphere from this camera angle which looks really nice. If i were to render again, I would decrease the roughness of some parts of the planet as they look a little to reflective from space

Videos

I also created 2 video renders which show the planet off in different ways.

Star destroyers

The first video render features star destroyers arriving at the planet from ‘Hyperspace’

"Proceduralism"

This render shows the planet off in more detail than the original render. I also colour graded it in Davinci Resolve
